Your First Step: Be Grateful For Every Success, No Matter The Size

The great poem Desiderata has a beautiful line that is great advice for all of us: “Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your career, however humble. It is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.”

As we start this new year, it is a very good time to take stock of, and enjoy, your achievements, your successes. Do you do that? Or do you rush right on to the next thing on your list, never stopping to savour what it took to get you where you are now?

The scriptures warn us that if we do not appreciate the gifts we now have, no more will come, and the ones we now have may even be taken away. Now, I’m not a fan of living in fear, but I do think of times when I have given a gift to someone and it was treated casually, or was expected and thus not appreciated. I’m way less motivated to give again.

I’m guessing you are too.

Try this ONE thing

Today, as you go about your day, stop for a minute or two to take in all the gifts, successes, achievements you have received from the great whole. Really think about how they have added to your life, your joy, your hopes. And take a moment to think who you might be without them.

And say a prayer of thanks.
