The Privilege Of Being Let In

We talk a lot about being authentic — about showing up as our real selves. But lately I’ve been thinking about the other side of that: what a gift it is when someone is authentic with you.

I was travelling with colleagues recently, and after work one evening a few of us gathered at the bar. The conversation started casually, as these things do, but before long it turned personal. Some of the people there were colleagues I didn’t know particularly well, which made what happened next feel even more tender.

They shared stories. Real ones. The kind that reveals what has shaped a person, what they’ve carried, what matters to them. I was surprised, touched, and deeply grateful. By the end of the evening, I felt a new fondness for each of them — not because I knew more facts about their lives, but because I had seen more of who they really are.

There is something sacred about being trusted with another person’s truth. When someone opens up, they are offering you a glimpse beneath the surface. They are trusting you to hold it with care.

And when that happens, something shifts. The relationship deepens. Respect grows. Appreciation grows. Maybe even love grows.

I can’t help thinking this is how love builds and spreads — one brave, honest conversation at a time.

Try this ONE thing

The next time someone opens up to you, pause and really receive it. Listen generously. Hold their story with care.

And when the moment feels right, offer a little more of your own truth too.

Because openness is rarely a one-way street. When we let ourselves be seen, we invite others to do the same — and together we create a little more trust, connection, and love in the world.
