The Quiet Joy Of Liking Your Life
As I reflected on gratitude during Canadian Thanksgiving, I realized something lovely: I’m genuinely happy and at peace right now. I’m comfortable with who I am, I like the life I’ve created, and I have plenty to look forward to.
It wasn’t always this way.
For years, I was raising two children on my own while building a career, working toward financial security and finishing university. I don’t remember thinking much about whether I was happy. I was so focused on duty and responsibility that happiness didn’t feel like something to pursue. I was simply doing what needed to be done.
Now I’m on the other side of that season. I can slow down, appreciate what I have and choose how I want to spend my days.
A few weeks ago, a friend was supposed to meet me in Palo Alto for a couple of days of rest and relaxation. He cancelled shortly before the trip.
Was I disappointed? Not really.
I suddenly had two days to spend exactly as I pleased. I slept in, enjoyed lovely lunches and dinners, lounged by the pool, did some shopping and binge-watched Jack Ryan. Quite literally, it was a perfect little getaway.
Of course, had my friend joined me, I’m sure I would have enjoyed those days just as much.

That realization stayed with me. My joy didn’t depend on who was there or what I was doing. It came from the ease I now feel within myself. I can find joy in companionship or solitude, in a full day or a quiet one, in the special moments and the ordinary ones.
And for that, I am profoundly grateful.
