The ONE Thing That Keeps You Going When It’s Hard

Some weeks are just…hard.
Recently, I found myself struggling on the dating front. Nothing dramatic — just discouraging enough to knock me off my centre. What brought me back was something I’ve returned to many times over the years: The Stockdale Paradox.
Here’s the essence of it: “You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end — which you can never afford to lose — with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be.”
Jim Stockdale was a prisoner of war for seven years during the Vietnam War. His situation was unimaginably brutal, and I’m certainly not comparing modern‑day dating (or any of our everyday challenges) to that. But the paradox itself applies to anything difficult we’re going through.
When things feel hard, we tend to swing to one extreme or the other:
False optimism: “It’s fine, it’s fine, everything’s fine.”
Defeat: “This is awful. I’m done. What’s the point?”
Neither helps.
The real strength lies in holding both truths at the same time:
This is hard.
And I still believe it will work out.
That’s the paradox. You don’t sugar‑coat reality. You don’t give up on the future. You do both — at the same time.
This mindset keeps you grounded and moving forward. It prevents despair without forcing positivity. It allows disappointment without losing hope. And most importantly, it keeps you going.

Try this ONE thing
Name one hard truth you’re facing — and one belief you’re choosing to hold anyway.
That’s it.
Simple, grounded, powerful.
