The Last 10% Is Where The Joy Is

I have zero emails in my inbox right now. I’m not sure how long it will last, but wow, does it feel good.
It’s been years since I got my inbox to zero, even though I used to teach a course called Getting to Zero in Your Inbox. I usually end the week with 15–20 emails still needing attention.
Not terrible. But not zero.
And the funny thing is, most of those emails could be handled quickly. Some need a decision. Some need a reply. Some are emails I already know I’m going to ignore. So why do I let them linger?
Why stop at almost done when done feels so delicious?
It makes me wonder where else I do this. Where do I complete 90% of something and then procrastinate on the last 10%? Where do I settle for “good enough” when one small final push would bring relief, lightness, even joy?
Because that’s what an empty inbox gives me: the exquisite feeling that nothing is waiting, nagging, or unanswered.
Maybe the goal needs to change.
Not almost zero. Zero.
Not mostly done. Done.
Try this ONE thing
Find one “almost done” thing in your life and finish it.
Clear the email. Make the decision. Send the reply. Book the appointment. Put the thing away.
Then notice how much lighter you feel.
