If Deadheading Your Petunias Brings Beautiful Growth, Why Not Try It In Your Life

Writer: Karen LaidlawKaren Laidlaw

When you go through your garden and remove the dead blooms from your plants, a practice called deadheading, that makes room for more new blooms. I’m often surprised at how abundant the new blooms are, especially with white, showy petunias.

As my friend and I were talking about this, she shared that she’s realized how the same is true in our lives. When we remove the old, no-longer-useful things, we create space for new and wonderful things to take their place.

This goes for your closet and those junk drawers. When you throw out the things that no longer serve a purpose for you, the space magically fills up with things that do delight you.

Same goes with people in our lives. Sometimes it’s okay to let go of old friendships that we’ve outgrown. Sometimes it’s okay to leave that club or team that now feels like duty. Sometimes it’s okay to end that relationship or quit that job that leaves us unfulfilled.

Not only is it okay, but it’s also necessary. It’s the only way to make space for new friends, new interests, new relationships, new passions. After all, if all your time is taken up with these low-energy things, how will you find the space for something new?

Try this ONE thing

Look for the places in your life that make you feel drained and listless and start deadheading. Then watch for the beautiful blooms that come up in those spaces.

Want to experience coaching? I like to start with a deep, get-to-know-you conversation to see if we are right for each other. Sometimes we talk for one or two hours at no charge. I have no goal except to bring about transformation. Together we work on the lies, the self-deception, and the fears of the power you perceive to be outside yourself. We work on your difficulties in making decisions and your inability thus far to make bold choices in life and to follow through and trust yourself completely to do so.

The irony for some people is that the very thing that they want the coaching for (an indecisive, half-hearted life) is what’s keeping them from deciding whether to get coaching.
