Appreciating What It As The First Step To Having More

I love this quote by Epicurus, ‘Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for’.

Think of all the things you now have that a few months or years ago, you didn’t. How many things can you think of? I first read this quote when I was in Singapore, on my 9th trip to Singapore, a place I once fervently hoped I would get to once. That is definitely worth savouring with a deep sigh of contentment.

I longed for the financial freedom of paying off my mortgage, and now I have done so…deep sigh of contentment.

Last weekend I bought myself a gorgeous, sexy leather coat, and I realized I didn’t have to wait for a sale or save up for it or put it on a wish list. I was able to buy it right then...deep sign of contentment.

Yes, there are still things I want that I don’t yet have and I could spend my time and energy lamenting that. Instead, I am realizing those things will surely come and now is the time to enjoy the journey to them.

And I can make those things come faster only by delighting in what I now have while I wait. This is the law of appreciation.

Try this ONE thing

What is ONE thing you are enjoying now that is something you once wished for? Stop and really take that in; you now have it. Savour it, pinch yourself at your luck. And then enjoy the journey to the next thing.
