When Welcome Change Still Gives You Whiplash
There’s been a lot of change surrounding me lately. Good change, for sure—but still change.
And it’s giving me a bit of whiplash.
For the past three years, I’d grown accustomed to a very hands-off style of leadership. I didn’t like it. It didn’t bring out my best work, but I adapted and made the best of it.
Then, suddenly, everything shifted. New leaders arrived with a much more hands-on approach. I welcomed it; I’d been hoping for it. And if I’m honest, it has taken some adjustment.
Having leaders show genuine interest in what I’m doing is a wonderful change. I see possibilities and opportunities everywhere.
But I’m also realizing how accustomed I’d become to the silence—and to operating without much connection. I didn’t enjoy it, but it had become familiar. Comfortable, even.
So this new attention feels good…and different.
I’ll gladly still take it. Still, a little advance warning might have helped.
