What If I'm Getting In My Own Way

Here’s an uncomfortable realization: perhaps it’s not just them. Perhaps I have something to change, too.

I’ve been reflecting on my dating experience and how I’m showing up. I want connection, but am I being open enough to allow it?

I’m bringing my professional self: capable, composed, ready to take charge. There’s nothing wrong with those qualities. But I’m beginning to wonder whether I’m relying on them so much that other parts of me don’t get much room.

The part that’s curious. The part that can be playful. The part that doesn’t have everything figured out.

Am I getting to know someone—or assessing whether this is going anywhere? Am I sharing who I am—or presenting the version of myself that feels safest?

This doesn’t mean every disappointment is my fault. Nor does it mean I need to become less confident, lower my standards or pretend to be someone else.

It means I can take responsibility for my part. For me, that starts with slowing down, being more curious and allowing myself to be known beyond what I do well. Less managing the experience. More being present for it.

I don’t need to fix who I am. I need to notice what I’m doing—and try something different.

Try this ONE thing

Choose ONE situation where you’re frustrated and ask yourself:

“What am I bringing to this that might be getting in the way?”

Not to blame yourself. To find something within your control.

Then try ONE small change: ask instead of assume, listen instead of direct, or share something honest instead of staying polished.
