I’ve been listening to Mel Robbins latest book, The Let Them Theory. A very interesting theory and quite helpful.
And yet, as I read, I kept feeling like something was off. It might’ve been a couple of inconsistencies she recounted. It might’ve been the preachy way she spoke as if she was the sole expert on this. By the end of the book, I was surprised to find that she didn’t credit any of the experts she had supposedly talked to while doing her research. When I heard she’s on tour and charging $600 - $1100 for a ticket, I really began to question what was going on. Why would people pay such an exorbitant amount to hear an author repeat what’s already written in her book and recounted on her podcast?
This week a friend sent me an article detailing how Robbins has plagiarized someone else’s ideas, without even a mention of their name. I can’t help but feel she’s a charlatan, which the dictionary defines as a malicious trickster; a fake person, especially one who deceives for personal profit.
There are two issues here: firstly, why didn’t I trust my own spidey sense that something was off and do some investigating myself? And secondly, why are we, as a society. willing to anoint someone as a guru, as smarter than we are, just because they’re rich, have famous friends and know how to market themselves.
Did we somehow forget that we can rely on ourselves, our own inner wisdom, our own instincts?

Try this ONE thing
By all means keep reading. But before you decide someone famous or rich knows what’s best for you, tap into your own self-knowledge. You can trust yourself, perhaps more than you think.
Want to experience coaching? I like to start with a deep, get-to-know-you conversation to see if we are right for each other. Sometimes we talk for one or two hours at no charge. I have no goal except to bring about transformation. Together we work on the lies, the self-deception, the fears of the power you perceive to be outside yourself. We work on your difficulties in making decisions and your inability thus far to make bold choices in life and to follow through and trust yourself completely to do so.
The irony for some people is that the very thing that they want the coaching for (an indecisive, half-hearted life) is what’s keeping them from deciding whether to get coaching.
