Break The Habit Of Finding Fault First: Focus On What’s Good

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to spot what’s wrong—at work, at home, or even in yourself—before you see what’s right? It’s not just you. Our brains are wired to scan for problems, a leftover survival instinct that’s not so helpful when it comes to living a joyful, fulfilling life.

But here’s the thing: what we focus on grows. The law of attraction teaches that if we constantly look for faults, we’ll find more of them. If we look for what’s working, we’ll find more of that, too.

Why Do We Find Fault First?

  • Negativity bias: Our minds naturally notice problems to keep us safe.

  • Habit: Over time, focusing on flaws becomes automatic.

  • Social reinforcement: Complaining can be a way to bond, but it rarely leads to happiness.

How to Shift Your Focus

  1. Notice the Habit: Catch yourself when you start to criticize or complain.

  2. Ask a Better Question: Instead of “What’s wrong?” try “What’s going well right now?” or “What can I appreciate in this moment?”

  3. Celebrate Small Wins: Keep a journal of daily successes, no matter how minor.

  4. Practice Gratitude: List a few things you’re grateful for each day.

  5. Surround Yourself with Positivity: Spend time with people who uplift you.

Try this ONE thing

Next time you catch yourself finding fault, pause and ask, “What’s working right now?” Write it down, say it out loud, or share it with a friend. You’ll be surprised how quickly your mood—and your outlook—can change.

Remember, shifting your focus from what’s wrong to what’s right isn’t about ignoring problems. It’s about building the habit of seeing the good, so you can attract more of it into your life.
