The Gift Of What Didn't Last

2 min read

Today is the birthday of someone I once loved.

I suppose, in some way, I still do. Not with longing or hope, but with a quiet fondness for someone who mattered to me once.

There is something beautiful about being on the other side of heart hurt.

With distance, I can see what I couldn’t see then: he wasn’t my person. He was many good things, but he could not—or would not—commit to me. For a long time, that felt personal. Now I know it wasn’t.

He simply could not be the partner I needed. He could not meet me in enthusiasm and joy, in learning and growing, in the kind of aliveness I want in a relationship.

There is nothing wrong with that. It just means it was never going to work for me.

A friend once told me that rejection is protection. At the time, I’m not sure I believed her. Rejection felt like loss. It felt like being unwanted. But now, with time and healing, I see what she meant.

Sometimes life protects us by not giving us what we want. Sometimes the closed door is mercy. Sometimes the person who cannot stay is making room for the life we are meant to live.

And so today, on his birthday, I feel grateful. Grateful that he came into my life for a season. Grateful for what he awakened in me. Grateful for the beauty that was there. And grateful, too, that he could not stay.

What once felt like loss has slowly revealed itself as a gift.

Try this ONE thing

Think of someone who came into your life for a season and is no longer there in the same way.

Ask yourself: What did this person bring me? What did this experience teach me? What opened because it ended?

You don’t have to deny the pain. But if enough time has passed, see if you can also find the gift.

Sometimes what didn’t last still gave us exactly what we needed.
