Everyone loves a big, exciting win, of course, but the reality is that they don’t come along that often. So if you need them to get or stay motivated, prepare to spend a lot of time in an unmotivated state.
It’s the small wins, the steady progress, the feeling of forward momentum that will consistently deliver the drive to keep going.
List-checkers know this all too well. I love the feeling of crossing things off my list.
This week I spent time designing and building a presentation, which I know can take much more time than I anticipate. I kept motivated by breaking the assignment into smaller parts and then tackling a part each day. The result? I got to cross something off the list five times during the week. And I got a lasting feeling of accomplishment sprinkled throughout the week, which kept me motivated and progressing all week.
‘The most professionally rewarding feeling in the world is a sense of forward motion.’, says Steven Bartlett, author of The Diary of a CEO. I agree.
Try this ONE thing
Keep a ‘small wins’ journal where you can record daily progress and watch your motivation, and success, soar.
Want to experience coaching? I like to start with a deep, get-to-know-you conversation to see if we are right for each other. Sometimes we talk for one or two hours at no charge. I have no goal except to bring about transformation. Together we work on the lies, the self-deception, and the fears of the power you perceive to be outside yourself. We work on your difficulties in making decisions and your inability thus far to make bold choices in life and to follow through and trust yourself completely to do so.
The irony for some people is that the very thing that they want the coaching for (an indecisive, half-hearted life) is what’s keeping them from deciding whether to get coaching.
