The Power of a Good Belly Laugh

Last week, on a business trip, I had the chance to catch up with a couple of senior leaders. Most of the time those conversations are work-heavy—updates, decisions, next steps. But this one? Pure fun.

The jokes were flying. We laughed at ridiculous things. We invented a couple of running jokes that got funnier every time they resurfaced. I can’t remember the last time I laughed that hard—or that long. Driving back to my hotel, I felt lighter, brighter…like someone had opened a window and let fresh air rush in.

And it made me wonder: when did laughter become something I stumble upon instead of something I make room for? Why am I not laughing as much these days? How could I inject a little—no, a lot—more lightness and play into ordinary life?

Do I have to wait for those rare moments when the magic appears…or can I create it on purpose? I’m not entirely sure, but I do know this: I want more of that feeling, and I’m willing to experiment to get it.

Maybe it starts with who I’m spending time with—the people who are quick to be serious, or quick to judge, or quick to complain. Or maybe it’s simpler than that: maybe I just need to be more intentional about finding one real, from-the-belly laugh every day. I’m going to start there.

Try this ONE thing

For the next 24 hours, schedule a 10-minute “laughter break.” Text a friend who makes you laugh, watch a short comedy clip, listen to a funny podcast segment—anything that reliably lightens you up. Then notice what shifts in your body and your mood.

I have a feeling laughter is medicine we could all use right now. I’m going in search of more. How about you?
