Success Can Be Quiet

When I was a young girl, I overheard my mom telling a friend, “Karen likes her own company.” It wasn’t exactly a complaint, but her tone told me it wasn’t quite a compliment either.

Somehow, I absorbed the message that enjoying my own company was something to downplay, maybe even something to fix.

Years later, through my corporate career, I learned the word for this: introversion. And what a relief that was. Introversion is not a flaw, a failure, or a lack of social skills. It simply means that introverts recharge by being with their own thoughts. It has no impact on how deeply we form relationships, how much we care, or how much fun we can be at a party. It just means quiet time is not empty time; for many of us, it’s nourishing.

I could easily spend an afternoon sitting by an open window reading or journaling, or an entire weekend alone, and feel peaceful, content, and completely myself. That may not be everyone’s idea of success, excitement, or a life well lived, but it is part of mine. And I am learning to claim that with joy.

Sometimes I still remember the sting of those early words, especially when others suggest the measure of a successful life is a packed social calendar. But I am old enough now, and wise enough now, to know better. A beautiful life can be full of people, or full of quiet, or—best of all—full of whatever truly fits the person living it.

Being an introvert is not an indictment of my personality. It is one of the ways I move through the world. It gives me space to think, to feel, to create, to notice, to restore myself. And instead of apologizing for that, I am choosing to appreciate it.

I do like my own company. What a lovely thing to finally say as a compliment.
